Healthy Eating

 There are many barriers that seniors may encounter when it comes to healthy eating. Among them are: time, effort, food safety, knowledge and skills, taste and cost. Healthy Eating for Seniors a guide published by The British Columbia Ministry of Health Services addresses the mentioned barriers. It includes information about supplements and how to eat with a chronic disease. The handbook also includes tips and recipes from other seniors who are dealing with new ways of eating after learning they have a chronic disease. If you want to find out how to eat with less fat and salt, to keep healthy body weight, to shop for healthy food on a budget this handbook will walk you through the basic rules.

During the week of the 9th to 12th of September ChefMyself project was presented in the AAL Forum 2014, held this year in Bucharest, Romania. More than 500 participants attended this year’s AAL Forum, which is the annual showcase event for the people involved in the AAL joint program projects and the AAL community. The AAL program is about independent living by using products and services for better lives and functional capability of older adults to promote a healthier lifestyle and to support carers, families and care organizations. In this sense, ChefMyself project is focusing on the nutrition topic of the 5th call of this program. 

"By 2050, the number of older persons will be twice the number of children in developed countries, and the number of older persons in developing countries is expected to double. This trend will have profound effects on countries and individuals."

On the 1st of October we will be glad to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons. On December 14 in 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October the 1st as the International Day of Older Persons as recorded in Resolution 45/106. The holiday was observed for the first time on October 1st 1991.

In accordance with the UN resolution October 1st should be the date when all eyes are turned toward the elderly and their needs. There is still much to be done to improve the situation of older people. The work should start from the nearest ones - family, neighbors, our local community. This task is both for public institutions, organizations and each and every one of us.

The ChefMyself consortium would like to wish all the seniors warmest wishes on the occasion of their international day. We wish everyone who enters their advanced age that this time will be full of activities, passion and possibilities and at the same time a chance for fulfillment, satisfaction and a sense of finding a proper place in life. We also hope that the International Day of Older Persons will carry new innovative solutions as our home cooking system enabling them to maintain healthy eating habits.

We hope that the memory of elders will not end on this one day only.
